IRS FORM 2290, Highway Heavy Vehicle Use Tax

The HVUT 2290 form is used to pay the heavy vehicle use tax, which is collected to maintain roads and highways across the nation. The current tax period begins on July 1st, 2016 and ends on June 30th, 2017. IRS Form 2290 must be filed and paid when a vehicle enters service, although agricultural and logging vehicles are exempt from payment. The due date for each month is the last day of the following month. The late filing penalty is equal to 4.5% of the total tax due, assessed on a monthly basis up to five months.


Form 2290 E-filing Requirements

These are the items that you’ll need to e-file IRS Form 2290:

  • EIN (Employee Identification Number)
  • Details of all vehicles you are filing the HVUT for, including each of their VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers)
  • The gross taxable weight of the vehicle(s)
  • The date the vehicle was purchased and first used on public highways
  • If you have a suspended vehicle, the record of its mileage

Step 1: Create Account

Step 3: Choose First Used Month

The 2290 due date for each month is the last day of the following month.

Step 5: Select IRS Payment Method
